The Brighton Varsity Hockey team celebrated a fourth straight KLAA Championship on Saturday, with a tight 1 to 0 victory over Hartland. Sam Brennan, freshman defenseman, picked a good time to get his first goal of the season with the game winner scored in the middle of the second period. Then the Bulldogs had to hang on, play some tight defense and kill off a few penalties to secure the one goal victory.
Brighton completes their regular season 9-0-3 (overall 12-7-5) and ranked 7th in Division 1. Michigan High School Hockey teams begin MHSAA State Playoffs on Monday. Brighton starts with Howell (ranked 5th), 5:00 pm, at Kensington Valley Ice House in a bracket type format, with the loser ending their season and the winner advancing. The Bulldogs hope to keep their string intact and advance to the State Finals for a fourth straight year.

The Brighton Varsity Hockey team is on a roll. The team is undefeated in the last eleven games (8-0-3) and with a win on Wednesday versus Livonia Franklin, (at Eddie Edgar Arena, 8:00 pm) they will secure a spot in the KLAA Championship game. If the Bulldogs succeed, the Championship game will be held Saturday, February 21, at Kensington Valley Ice House – Brighton, at 5:00 pm, with the opponent already determined: Hartland.
After a rough start to the season, losing the first 5 games to highly ranked teams, the Bulldogs have brought their record up to 10-6-4. They are currently ranked 6th in the MIHS Hockey Hub Division 1 Rankings. Highlights of the season so far include two wins on their annual “U.P.” trip, over Calumet and Houghton (only their second loss all season). In what is becoming a rivalry of playoff contenders, Brighton has played Livonia Stevenson three times this season resulting in 0-2 loss, 3-2 win and 1-1 tie. Also, a recent come-from-behind victory over Northville, 5-3, kept them in the league race.
This weekend, Brighton will play against two teams from the West side of the state, Grand Rapids Catholic Central and Grand Rapids Forest Hills, in the MIHL Showcase. The boys will need to be early risers, with Friday’s game at 10:20 am, Saturday’s at 8:40 am, at Kennedy Ice Arena in Trenton. State playoffs follow soon, beginning February 24th and running through March 8th final at Compuware Arena. The Bulldogs hope to be there for the fourth year in a row.

Hockey season is here. With tryouts behind them, the Brighton Bulldogs will settle into practice mode for the next few days before their first scrimmage vs. Trenton at Kennedy Arena on Saturday, November 15th. Then a week later, they have their home opener vs. rival Detroit Catholic Central on Saturday, November 22nd. The last time they met, the State Title was on the line at Compuware Arena with over 4,000 people in attendance.
The Bulldogs have ten returning players from last year’s successful team. The 2013-2014 team made their third straight trip to the MHSAA Division 1 finals but ended up one game short of a third straight State Title. They finished their season 23-7-1 and State Final Runner-up. Over the last three years the squad has compiled a record of 74-13-4, winning two Division 1 State Championships. One of the highlights of last year was the victory over Howell outdoors at the Winterfest Game held at Comerica Park (see photos).
